Research- Depth of Field and Focus

Focal length and diaphragm aperture affect the depth of field of a scene — that is, how much the background, mid-ground and foreground will be rendered in "acceptable focus" (only one exact plane of the image is in precise focus) on the film or video target. Depth of field (not to be confused with depth of focus) is determined by the aperture size and the focal distance. A large or deep depth of field is generated with a very small iris aperture and focusing on a point in the distance, whereas a shallow depth of field will be achieved with a large (open) iris aperture and focusing closer to the lens. Depth of field is also governed by the format size. 70 mm film has much more depth of field for the same focal length lens than does 35 mm. 16 mm has even less and most digital video cameras have less depth of field than 16 mm. But if one considers the field of view and angle of view, the smaller the image is, the shorter the focal length should be, as to keep the same field of view. Then, the smaller the image is, the more depth of field is obtained, for the same field of view. Therefore, 70mm has less depth of field than 35mm for a given field of view, 16mm more than 35mm, and video cameras even more depth of field than 16mm. As videographers try to emulate the look of 35 mm film with digital cameras, this is one issue of frustration - excessive depth of field with digital cameras and using additional optical devices to reduce that depth of field.
In Citizen Kane (1941), cinematographer Gregg Toland and director Orson Welles used tighter apertures to create very large depth of field in the scenes, often rendering every detail of the foreground and background of the sets in sharp focus. This practice is known as deep focus. Deep focus became a popular cinematographic device from the 1940s onwards in Hollywood. Today, the trend is for more shallow focus.
To change the plane of focus from one object or character to another within a shot is commonly known as a rack focus.

Media A2 Evaluation

The advanced stage of the media production was a big step up from the foundation stage; it included me using and challenging all the media skills and techniques that I have learnt from the past year, but to a much higher level.  Throughout this particular project I thought that I would do more research linked directly to my project which I failed to do last year, I also did more theorist research in order to give my project a direct link to a theory and reflect on how I managed to accomplish this. During the advanced stage I took Audience into much more consideration than I did in the foundation stage, I managed to figure out what the audience would want, I did this by creating a questionnaire, I also researched the top 10 best selling films, and by looking at the genre and representation used in them films, I was able to discover what audiences preferred which films and why. This then lead me to decide which genre I would like to focus on and base my film around, therefore by doing this research I would meet all the target audiences wants and needs.  I also did a lot of research on different aspects of the camera, for example depth of field research and natural lighting research, due to the fact this is the type of lighting we mainly used in our short film.
Our production team consisted of four females from the same Media Class, myself, Charlotte Elson, Rebecca Cobb and Alice Fenwick. We chose this group because we knew we would work together very well, We knew this because me and Alice and worked together in the foundation stage and created a high standard introduction to a short film, we also get along very well as a four and knew we would all co operate equally and create a short film which is of a very high standard. We all created a treatment for an individual idea for a short film that we had thought of over the summer holiday. We then brought them back to the class and pitched our ideas to the rest of the group, by using different aspects of each of our ideas we managed to come up with an idea we all agreed on.
The idea for our short film was of an accident that would affect a young woman for the rest of her life, preventing her from hearing. To get to this we had many group meetings to decide on a final idea, while changing it as we went along to make it the best it could possibly be. We came up with the name of “Once Heard” which reflects it being an emotional journey throughout her life and what she’s come to now and how she is dealing with her loss.  We researched many different short films to see what lighting, levels, narrative, camera angles, shots and movements we would need to use to be able to portray the best messages. We thought we would email the leader of the Royal Association for Deaf people Sue Mountford to get more information on the Deaf community and find out exactly what it’s like and what they think of the media in relation to the help they give to Deaf people. We asked her a lot of questions and she answered them to full detail including an answer which read “There is a complete lack of understanding of Deafness in society and most of the barrier Deaf people face are societal” this encouraged us a lot more to portray the strong message that deaf people are still people and shouldn’t be blocked out by society.
In our short film we managed to challenge and develop forms and conventions by promoting awareness for people with hearing difficulties which you don’t see a lot of in the media. We also tried to emphasis the view on how careful you should be while drinking due to the fact you never know what could happen which backs up many drinking campaigns that we had researched for example “Think Safe Drink Safe” which was organised by the government and police force trying to attack students with facts and information on responsible drinking.  Due to the fact mental illness’ are a very sensitive subjects we thought we would discuss it in a very fair manner but also make it so strong so that people were empowered by our messages.
Our ancillary tasks were a huge success, we planned out three different types of posters, while researching three before hand, We took many different aspects from each poster, for example the image that is on the front, the font of the text and the way the text lies across the image. The posters that we researched were from Deaf/Illness based films, we did this so we could find out exactly what a poster should look like in order to make the audience want to see it. We also drew out two poster ideas that we had and used one of them and it worked to our full advantage and we managed to create some good ideas on Photoshop. I was in charge of making the poster and I think I did a good job and the posters will entice the audience into watching the film. I think researched four different double page spread film reviews which I got off different websites such as www.totalfilm.com and www.empireonline.com, I printed them off and annotated them in my folder so I could see what was good and what was bad, therefore knowing exactly what we needed to put on our double page spread. We produced one which had screen shots of the film; big bold writing and one that we thought would really interest the audience. We included the rating, genre, running time and target audience age because we thought these were vital points to include so that the audience knew what to expect.
Audience feedback was a thing that we took most pride in, we had to find out exactly what our target audience needed and wanted, to do this we produced 20 copies of a questionnaire which I handed out to people in my hometown, around college and in our Media class, I did it to different ages so therefore we could get all different types of feedback, enabling us to reach out to all different audiences and hopefully meeting their needs and wants. We got very good feedback and concluded that our target audience would be men and women aged 16-24 because they’re the ones who are most likely to watch short films due to the fact our short film would most likely be shown in an educational environment due to short films not having a major affect on the media unlike cinemas. We asked questions like “Do you think flashbacks are an effective way of showing the past?” this enabled us to discover what the audience want to see and how they would like us to portray the past, we used many questions like this so we could edit it in a way that they would expect and want. We thought this was the best way to do it because we would avoid many issues along the way if we stuck to the questionnaire results because their permanent proof of what the audience would like to see.
We used new media technology in the sense that we used a much larger, more professional camera in this product, in order to receive better camera angles shots and movement, we could use more techniques for example pull focus which we enjoyed using. We also could zoom a lot further in and still zoom. Although facing some trouble with our tripod being quite squeaky, we overcame this by figuring out how to loosen it and fixing it using our own initiative. When editing our short film we used Premiere Pro which was a huge step up from Windows Movie Maker which I used on my last short film. Premier Pro is a lot more technical and we needed a lot of knowledge on the software to be able to understand how to use it, in order to do this we watched many teachings on YouTube and what to press to do particular techniques. We also used Photoshop to create our poster and Windows Excel to create our double page spread.
In conclusion I think that this task was a huge success, the time management went well and I got everything sorted out in time and when I needed it. I produced a lot of research that is based and linked on my main project and I feel that I used media techniques and expanded language to my advantage. I feel that I have stepped up a lot since the foundation stage. Although I found it difficult at times because we had some issues with the camera where we had put it on the tripod wrong, but we dealt with it like adults and managed to overcome the problems we faced. I also feel that I have learnt a lot from this foundation stage, I know that there needs to be a lot of research done into your main project to actually figure out what youre trying to portray and how you can do that. My audience research really helped me do this and the people we contacted to try and figure this out. I am very happy with this project and feel that it has been a huge accomplishment.

Research- Natural Lighting

Light is necessary to create an image exposure on a frame of film or on a digital target (CCD, etc.). The art of lighting for cinematography goes far beyond basic exposure, however, into the essence of visual storytelling. Lighting contributes considerably to the emotional response an audience has watching a motion picture.
Considering this, we chose to do research on natural lighting which we think would benefit our short film in various ways due to the fact it’s an educational informational short film, which deals with real life situations.
“In the UK we are used to hearing of SAD, Seasonal Affective Disorder, a clinically diagnosed condition in which the lack of sunlight in winter makes people feel ill. Natural light helps people to feel better but it can also aid the healing process. In hospitals, studies have proven that the recovery rate of patients is accelerated where levels of natural light are increased.”
This links back to our genre, due to the fact it is all about becoming ill and losing her hearing, if we were to use natural lighting it would give off the impression our film is about illness and reflect on her aim to get better.
Natural Lighting comes across as very realistic, there is nothing set up and fake about it. To do with we would need to capture on a reasonably sunny day.

Theorists & Practitioners

Shane Meadows- We were inspired by his films, his use of editing, and his realistic approach of characters, we were also inspired by true events due to the fact Shane's films are all based on real life.

Laura Mulvey- "The Male Gaze", we used a panning upwards shot of our female protagonists body, positioning the audience to see her from a males perspective. Although we also tried to go against this by not showing too much of the girl characters flesh.

Todorov- We know that his theory usually includes an equilibrium, then disequilibrium and then a new equilibrium, but we decided to challengehis theory by doing g a non-linear narrative, e,g our use of flashbacks and starting our film at the end. We thought this would have a better effect on our audience and draw them in within the first 10 seconds of our film which we wanted.
Vladimir Propp- Challenged his conventions in that the female was the heroine in our production which went against stereotypical male who predominantly is known for moving a narrative forward. However, we did follow his character functions in using Becca as a protagonist and the Man involved as our antagonist (the one the protagonist has to fight against who creates all these issues).

Vladimir Propps Character Theory

  1. The villain — struggles against the hero.
  2. The dispatcher —character who makes the lack known and sends the hero off.
  3. The (magical) helper — helps the hero in the quest.
  4. The princess or prize — the hero deserves her throughout the story but is unable to marry her because of an unfair evil, usually because of the villain. the hero's journey is often ended when he marries the princess, thereby beating the villain.
  5. Her father — gives the task to the hero, identifies the false hero, marries the hero, often sought for during the narrative. Propp noted that functionally, the princess and the father can not be clearly distinguished.
  6. The donor —prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object.
  7. The hero or victim/seeker hero — reacts to the donor, weds the princess.
  8. False hero — takes credit for the hero’s actions or tries to marry the princess

Vladimir Propps Character Functions

1.ABSENTATION: A member of a family leaves the security of the home environment. This may be the hero or some other member of the family that the hero will later need to rescue. This division of the cohesive family injects initial tension into the storyline. The hero may also be introduced here, often being shown as an ordinary person.
2.INTERDICTION: An interdiction is addressed to the hero ('don't go there', 'don't do this'). The hero is warned against some action (given an 'interdiction').
3.VIOLATION of INTERDICTION. The interdiction is violated (villain enters the tale). This generally proves to be a bad move and the villain enters the story, although not necessarily confronting the hero. Perhaps they are just a lurking presence or perhaps they attack the family whilst the hero is away.
4.RECONNAISSANCE: The villain makes an attempt at reconnaissance (either villain tries to find the children/jewels etc.; or intended victim questions the villain). The villain (often in disguise) makes an active attempt at seeking information, for example searching for something valuable or trying to actively capture someone. They may speak with a member of the family who innocently divulges information. They may also seek to meet the hero, perhaps knowing already the hero is special in some way.
5.DELIVERY: The villain gains information about the victim. The villain's seeking now pays off and he or she now acquires some form of information, often about the hero or victim. Other information can be gained, for example about a map or treasure location.
6.TRICKERY: The villain attempts to deceive the victim to take possession of victim or victim's belongings (trickery; villain disguised, tries to win confidence of victim). The villain now presses further, often using the information gained in seeking to deceive the hero or victim in some way, perhaps appearing in disguise. This may include capture of the victim, getting the hero to give the villain something or persuading them that the villain is actually a friend and thereby gaining collaboration.
7.COMPLICITY: Victim taken in by deception, unwittingly helping the enemy. The trickery of the villain now works and the hero or victim naively acts in a way that helps the villain. This may range from providing the villain with something (perhaps a map or magical weapon) to actively working against good people (perhaps the villain has persuaded the hero that these other people are actually bad).
8.VILLAINY or LACK: Villain causes harm/injury to family member (by abduction, theft of magical agent, spoiling crops, plunders in other forms, causes a disappearance, expels someone, casts spell on someone, substitutes child etc., comits murder, imprisons/detains someone, threatens forced marriage, provides nightly torments); Alternatively, a member of family lacks something or desires something (magical potion etc.). There are two options for this function, either or both of which may appear in the story. In the first option, the villain causes some kind of harm, for example carrying away a victim or the desired magical object (which must be then be retrieved). In the second option, a sense of lack is identified, for example in the hero's family or within a community, whereby something is identified as lost or something becomes desirable for some reason, for example a magical object that will save people in some way.
9.MEDIATION: Misfortune or lack is made known, (hero is dispatched, hears call for help etc./ alternative is that victimized hero is sent away, freed from imprisonment). The hero now discovers the act of villainy or lack, perhaps finding their family or community devastated or caught up in a state of anguish and woe.
10.BEGINNING COUNTER-ACTION: Seeker agrees to, or decides upon counter-action. The hero now decides to act in a way that will resolve the lack, for example finding a needed magical item, rescuing those who are captured or otherwise defeating the villain. This is a defining moment for the hero as this is the decision that sets the course of future actions and by which a previously ordinary person takes on the mantle of heroism.
